Video surveillance can be a great way to assist in identifying a criminal after a crime has been committed, but the benefits don’t start there. Many people assume that video surveillance can only help after the fact, but in reality, the placement and presence of even one camera can help to deter crime.
Just like you would choose to pursue the easiest route to work- less traffic, etc., a criminal looks for the easiest target he or she can find. If a business is posted with surveillance signs, cameras, and spot monitors showing the cameras for everyone to see, it doesn’t exactly look like an easy target from a criminal’s point of view. But the c-store down the street with just one person working each night and no visible security system provides a much easier target.
Even establishments who cant (or don’t think they can) afford a video surveillance system benefit from hanging signs saying they are being surveyed by closed circuit TV systems. Some outdoor applications also include a colored light or strobe, as a signal that the area is under surveillance.
Not only do visible cameras help to prevent outside crime, but a camera system also helps to deter petty crime often commited by employees. Cameras viewing the register areas, and a DVR/NVR in the manager’s office lets employees know that they are on camera without making them feel like they are being accused or investigated. A camera system also encourages employees to be more productive, and to avoid downtime, knowing that their shift could be reviewed again later, or that their manager could be watching real-time from his or her mobile device or home computer.
Visible security systems can also create a sense of safety and security for employees. Knowing that the area is under surveillance provides assurance that if anything were to happen, it would be recorded.
So, not only will a video surveillance system provide peace of mind for business owners and employees, it can be used to deter crime before it ever happens.
